All Ontario health regulators have a list of the professionals they oversee. This list is called a “public register.” You can check the registers to make sure that your healthcare professional is allowed to practise in Ontario.
When you see a regulated healthcare professional in Ontario, this is what you have the right to expect:
- You can find up-to-date information about your healthcare professional using the online register available on each healthcare regulator’s website.
- Your healthcare professional will clearly explain any proposed treatment or procedure.
- Your healthcare professional will clearly indicate fees or costs for services.
- You can accept or refuse any treatment or procedure.
- You can ask questions and express concerns.
- You will be treated as a partner in making decisions about your healthcare.
- You will be given the right treatment for your condition.
- Your treatment will be given safely.
- You will be treated with respect and understanding.
- You should have information about what to do if your health changes or worsens.
- Your personal information will remain confidential.
- You can contact an Ontario health regulator to talk about a concern or to make a complaint.
